Friday-Sunday, January 22-24, 2010
Rosh Pina is pleased to announce our upcoming Scholar-in-Residence Shabbaton, featuring Rahel Berkovits, on Shabbat Parshat Bo, January 22-24, 2010! We are planning an exciting weekend with a number of opportunities to learn from Rahel, who is a teacher at the Pardes Institute, the principal at Beit Rabban, a non-denominational grade school, the editor-in-chief and halakhic editor of "Ta Shma: JOFA's Halakhic Source Guide Series," and a founding member of Congregation Shira Hadasha. Our tentative schedule is as follows: Friday night, Jan. 22: Shiur and Dessert Oneg "Who are the People in your Neighborhood? Darkhei Shalom - the Path to Building Community: A text study in Mishnah Tractate Gittin." How important is it to compromise the letter of the law for the sake of peace amongst people? Whom do the rabbis consider to be part of an averages Jew’s concentric community? Which areas in life do they feel most cause fighting and unrest in communities? (Don’t be surprised when Shul is first on the list!) Shabbat morning/afternoon, Jan. 23: Shacharit (including d'var torah by Rahel), followed by: Lunch and Learn: "Partnership Minyanim: A Survey Course." A halakhic analysis of the issues faced by partnership minyanim. A text study of a number of important topics such as women’s voice in the synagogue, women and Torah reading, mourner’s kaddish, mixed megillah reading, women and Hallel, and more. Click here to RSVP for the Lunch & Learn: Sunday morning, Jan. 24: Shacharit, followed by: Bagels 'n' Schmooze: an informal opportunity to talk with Rahel and learn from her experiences as a Shira Hadasha founding member. All programs will be free except for the Lunch 'n' Learn, which is $15 if you RSVP by January 15, and $18 afterwards. Click on the above link to RSVP. If you have any questions or would like to help plan the shabbaton, please email BerkovitsShabbaton@roshpinadc.org. We hope you'll be able to join us! Biography: Rahel Berkovits is currently the principal at Beit Rabban, a non-denominational grade school in New York City, and lectured for ten years on Talmud, halakha and the status of women in Judaism at the Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies in Jerusalem. She has studied Talmud and Jewish texts in both traditional and academic settings at institutions such as Midreshet Lindenbaum, The Shalom Hartman Institute, and Hebrew University. She lectures widely in Israel and abroad on topics concerning women and Jewish law, and has published entries in "Jewish Women: A Comprehensive Historical Encyclopedia." Rahel is also the editor-in-chief and halakhic editor of "Ta Shma: JOFA's Halakhic Source Guide Series." Finally, she is a founding member of Congregation Shira Hadasha, a progressive halakhic minyan in Jerusalem that pioneered the model of t'flilah on which communities like Rosh Pina are based. |
